Chattanooga, TN
With a population of approximately 182,113 in 2021, Chattanooga is the hub of Southeast Tennessee. The city is home to several attractions, including the Incline Railway, one of America’s oldest funicular railways that takes riders up Lookout Mountain. You can also find Ruby Falls waterfall and Rock City on Lookout Mountain, as well as Point Park, where a Civil War battle was fought in 1863.
Geography and Climate
Chattanooga is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains along the Tennessee River. The Chickamauga Dam, located north of downtown, impounds the Tenessee River. The city is situated between the southwestern Ridge-and-valley Appalachians and Walden’s Ridge, with the river running through and separating them. You can find Missionary Ridge a few miles east, which cuts right through Chattanooga. The city has a humid subtropical climate that brings hot, humid summers and mild winters.
History
First inhabiting the Chattanooga area were the Native Americans, namely the Cherokee. In the late 1700s, a trading post was established by American settlers in the area, and by 1838 the city of Chattanooga was incorporated. The Cherokee were removed from the area in 1838 and forced to journey West on what became known as the Trail of Tears for its many fatalities.
In 1863, during the Civil War, Union forces made their way to Chattanooga and fought against the Confederate Army at Lookout Mountain. This battle is now commemorated at the Battles for Chattanooga Museum. After the war, the city rapidly rebuilt itself into a hub for railroads and factories.
